-- General Information --

As I said before, there are not much proven informations about Zack. Fact is that he was Soldier, first class, and probably second in strength after Sephiroth. Some also call him Sephiroths shadow. He was the Soldier in Nibelheim, not Cloud, and he also was the best - and only - friend of Sephiroth. That's what Cloud tells at the Inn in Kalm, when he still has Zack's memory.
Another known fact is that Zack was from Gongaga, and he probably left at young age to become Soldier. His parents don't know that he is dead (if he really is) and tell he hasn't send them a letter for 10 years. That's why you could think he didn't have a good realtionship with his parents, cause else he would have visited them or at least mailed them. The Nibelheim mission was only five years ago, remember?
And of course any FFVII player should have noticed that Zack had been Aerith's boyfriend, and some might even say she was his only love. Hard to believe, isn't it? I think there had been many girls wanting to date Zack. And by the way, Aerith said it wasn't true love, and fell in love with Cloud in the end.
Zack was about five years older than Cloud, and he was taller than him, just like a middle between Cloud and Sephiroth. Anyone knows he had this unmistakable long, spikey black hair and green-gold makou eyes. (Makes me think if every Soldier but Seph had that spikey hair. X3) From all we know about Cloud Zack must have been a person with a friendly, carefree and cheerful attitude to life, been quite the woman's guy, and an overall pleasant character everyone liked.
After they fled from Hojo's lab in Nibelheim Zack took Cloud to Midgar with him, where he was "killed" (nobody really knows if he's dead, do we?) protecting Cloud on the way. They must've become friends in Nibelheim, or probably even before that, cause Zack calls him his buddy all the time.
Nobody really knows why Cloud took his personality after the Nibelheim incident, or if it had something to do with Hojo's litte experiments on them to make them "Sephiroth-Clones", but well, that's how we got to know this great character, so we should be thankful, shouldn't we? Don't get me wrong, Cloud is a great character, too.
